Amazon Prime Video’s exclusive series “Lumination” is set to take audiences inside some of the UK’s most awe-inspiring independent cinemas. With a five-star rating on Amazon Prime Video and presented by television director and cinephile Perry J. O’Halloran, the five-part series presents an unprecedented access to the country’s most prestigious and remarkable cinema buildings.
The documentary follows the director between lockdowns one and two of 2021 in an effort to drive audiences back to their local picture houses, taking cameras behind the velvet red curtain and exploring the unique, strange and magical world of cinemas. Each episode will take viewers through remarkable international treasures, such as the 175 year-old Regent Street Cinema, Olympic Studios, Broadstairs’ Palace Cinema and Liverpool’s VideOdyssey.
With a focus on rich history, captivating characters, secrets and humorous tales, Lumination delves deep into the meteoric rise, fall and resurgence of the humble, homegrown movie theatre, as well as exploring what’s at stake for communities when they disappear from high streets forever.
Among the featured cinemas are London’s Rio Cinema, known for its safe-haven during some of the city’s most tumultuous times in the LGBTQ+ community, and Kent’s Royal Cinema, one of the only buildings of its kind in the world.
The documentary has already enjoyed positive feedback in its earliest screenings, prompting conversations with prominent organisations as plans for additional series progress.
Produced by True Lies Ltd and directed by Perry J. O’Halloran, Lumination is available to stream and own in the UK and US on Amazon’s Prime Video platform. The series also features original music written and produced by O’Halloran.
Established in 2019 by O’Halloran, True Lies Ltd has developed and produced cinematic stories for cinematic audiences, including projects with ITV and the Edinburgh International Festival. The company is currently preparing for its first feature film production.
